I've read this book several times and have lead two groups through it already; even so, I am still so excited to begin again. This is one of my all time favorite books; it is an excellent introduction to doctrinal studies. Ferguson writes with simplicity and clarity, but he doesn't throw away the theological terms or "dumb it down" in any way.

There are 18 chapters in this book, so I don't know if we'll make it all the way through. I hope we do, though, because the last chapter--Glorification-- is one of my favorites(that and the chapter on Adoption. )

If I can find the time, I may post some of my notes for each chapter. Not sure if that will happen.

Related Tags: The Christian Life, Sinclair Ferguson

Articles and Sermons IX

It's been a while since I updated my reading blog. It must do this, for the great depend upon the small. The minutest movement of my will is regulated by the will of God. And in this I rejoice. Woe is me if it be not so. If I shrink from so unlimited control and guidance, it is plain that I dislike the idea of being wholly at the disposal of God. I am wishing to be in part at my own disposal. I am ambitious of regulating the lesser movements of my will, while I give up the greater to His control. And thus it comes out that I wish to be a god to myself. I do not like the thought of God having all the disposal of my destiny. If He gets His will, I am afraid that I shall not get mine. It comes out, moreover, that the God about whose love I was so fond of speaking, is a God to whom I cannot trust myself implicitly for eternity. Yes, this is the real truth. Man's dislike at God's sovereignty arises from his suspicion of God's heart. And yet the men in our day, who deny this absolute sovereignty, are the very men who profess to rejoice in the love of God, - who speak of that love as if there were nothing else in God but love. The more I understand of the character of God, as revealed in Scripture, the more shall I see that He must be sovereign, and the more shall I rejoice from my inmost heart that He is so."

From God's Will and Man's Will
--Horatius Bonar

Related Tags: Horatio Bonar, God's Will and Man's Will, God's Sovereignty, Puritan

Articles and Sermons III

The True God by James Montgomery Boice

Related Tags: theology, doctrine of God, James Montgomery Boice

Books: Chapters Only

The Christian Life, by Sinclair Ferguson

Chapter 13: Sins Dominion Ended

Spiritual Depression by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Chapter 8: Feelings

. . .Feelings are meant to be engaged, and when the gospel comes to us it does involve the whole man. It moves his mind as he sees its glorious truths, it moves his heart in the same way and it moves his will. . .we cannot create feelings, we cannot command them at will. You cannot generate feelings within yourself. You can, perhaps, make yourself weep and bring tears to your own eyes, but that does not of necessity mean real feelings. There is a false sentimentality very different from true emotion. That is something beyond our control; we cannot create it. However much you try you will not succeed. Indeed, in a sense, the more you try to produce feelings within yourself, the more you are increasing your own misery.

Related Tags: The Christian Life, Sinclair Ferguson, Spiritual Depression, D. Rather than try to remember and reconstruct, I will begin today to keep track of the articles, sermons, and single chapter readings for the year. If I found the sermon or article online, I will try to remember to post a link. If it is a chapter or chapters from a book, I will give the title, author, chapter(s), pages and a brief word about how it related to what I was studying at the time.

Many of the articles come from The Highway's Article of the Month. Others come through my own study or recommendations of others.

April 15, 06
I'll start with the articles I read last night--both from Augustus Toplady

The Resurrection of Christ

The Application of the Resurrection of Christ

Books of '06--D. Sometimes it is hard to see the big picture, but wait--you'll need to read this story to understand.

Leaf By Niggle is found in The Tolkien Reader.

Related Tags: books, J. What had been the life of his soul? pg. 93

Anger may be foolish and absurd, an one may be irritated when in the wrong; but a man never feels outraged unless in some respect he is at bottom right. Jean Valjean felt outraged. pg. 95

Jean Valjean was not, as we have seen, of an evil nature. His heart was still right when he arrived in the galleys. While there he condemned society, and felt that he had become wicked; he condemned Providence and felt he had become impious. pg.96

When many diverse sensations have disturbed the day, when the mind is preoccupied, we can fall asleep once, but not a second time. Sleep comes at first much more readily than it comes again. Such was the case for Jean Valjean. He could not get to sleep, and so he began to think. pg. 103

Jean Valjean felt like a man who is just about to faint.
The bishop approached him, and said, in a low voice. "Forget not, never forget that you have promised me to use this silver to become an honest man."
Jean Valjean, who had no recollection of this promise, stood confounded. The bishop had laid much stress upon these words as he uttered them. He continued, solemnly:
"Jean Vajean, my brother: you belong no longer to evil, but to good. It is your soul that I am buying for you. I withdraw it from dark thoughts and from the spirit of perdition, and I give it to God!" pg. 112

He beheld his life, and it seemed to him horrible; his soul, and it seemed to him frightful. There was, however, a softened light upon that life and upon that soul. It seemed to him that he was looking upon Satan by the light of Paradise. pg. 119

Related Tags: book review, books, reading list, Les Miserables, Victor Hugo, Jean Valjean

Books of '06--Above all Earthly Powers

This is really Tom's book, but I have been poking my nose into it when he's not reading. What a wonderful, challenging journey! As I read through Katy's experiences, I could indentify so strongly with her feelings and emotions! Her struggles were of a different nature than mine, but her responses and the lessons learned are so amazingly similar. The work of sanctification is a journey--sometimes two steps forward and one step back (or one step forward and two steps back!) and yet it is Christ who sanctifies us in His providential timing and in His wise, judicious ways and so we can rest as we struggle onward, Stepping Heavenward.

You can order this book at Lamplighter Publishing

Related Tags: book review, books, reading list, Stepping Heavenward, Lamplighter Publishing

Books of '06--MLJ Ephesians 1

My mother gave me money for my birthday and I found the 8 volume commentary on Ephesians by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones at Monergism for a song. It arrived today, just in time for New Years reading.

I will be studying through the series this year. Can't wait.

God's Ultimate Purpose is the exposition of Ephesians Chapter 1.

I set out to write out my thoughts, chapter by chapter, and so have a record of my study of this series, but I can see now that that is a task that will hinder rather than enrich my reading at this point. Rather, I have decided to write a summary at the end of each book rather than each chapter. I hope to finish this book by the end of the month. I thought that I'd be able to read one book per month and study through the whole series in a year, but the teaching is dense and deep, therefore I doubt I will be able to finish this in one year. Regardless, it is a worthy undertaking and one that will undoubtably change me.

Michael Haykin at Historica Ecclesiastica has a wonderful biographical sketch on Dr. David Martyn Lloyd-Jones. From the article:

But it was not until I read the first volume of Iain H. Murray’s life of “the Doctor” that I experienced the deep impact of his life and thought [David Martyn Lloyd-Jones. The First Forty Years 1899-1939 (Edinburgh: The Banner of Truth Trust, 1982)]. Suffice it to say, that of all the Christian authors and expositors of the twentieth century, none has shaped my thinking as a Christian more than this man and his writing.

Although, for me, the writings of Jonathan Edwards have been most formative, D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones is a close second and Iain H. He, too, recommends Murray's biography and recommends a few other Lloyd-Jones titles.

Related Tags: book review, books, reading list, Dr. D. (12/29/05-XXX)

Book Notes on Book I: An Upright Man

Concerning the Bishop

Be it true or false, what is said about men often has a much influence upon their lives, and especially upon their destinies, as what they do. pg. 9

Man has a body which is at once his burden and his temptation. He drags it along, and yields to it. He ought to watch over it, to keep it in bounds; to repress it, and only to obey it at the last extremity. It may be wrong to obey even then, but if so, the fault is venial. It is a fall, but a fall upon the knees, which may end in prayer. pg. 20-21

"Have no fear of robbers or murderers. Such dangers are without, and are but petty. We should fear ourselves. . .My sister, a priest should never take any precautions against a neighbor. What his neighbor does, God permits. Let us confine ourselves to prayer to God when we think that danger hangs over us. Let us beseech Him, not for ourselves, but that our brother may not fall into crime on our account." pg. 34-35.

It seemed as if it were a sort of rite with him, to prepare himself for sleep by meditating in presence of the great spectacle of the starry firmament. Sometimes at a late hour of the night, if the two women were awake, they would hear him slowly promenading the walks. He was there alone with himself, collected, tranquil, adoring, comparing the serenity of his heart with the serenity of the skies, moved in the darkness by the visible splendors of the constellations, and the invisible splendor of God, opening his soul to the thoughts which fall from the Unknown. pg. 61

What was more needed by this old man who divided the leisure hours of his life, where he had so little leisure, between gardening in the daytime and contemplation at night? Was not this narrow enclosure, with the sky for a background, enought to enable him to adore God in His most beautiful as well as in His most sublime works? Indeed, is not that all, and what more can be desired? A little garden to walk, and immensity to reflect opon. At his feet something to cultivate and gather; above his head something to study and meditate upon; a few flowers on the earth and all the stars in the sky. pg. 62

Related Tags: book review, books, reading list, Les Miserables, Victor Hugo, quotes

Books of '06--God's Minute

Prayers, posted daily to Hiraeth

I will read it until the end of the year and then begin again. . .

Related Tags: books, reading list, daily prayers, prayers, God's Minute, Hiraeth
